Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is when a man cannot get or maintain an erection that is required for sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is a common problem, believed to affect 40% of all men over 40. It can also occur in younger men. Erectile dysfunction can affect a mans self confidence and can strain relationships. However, there are a number of effective treatment available for erectile dysfunction.
What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?
Erection problems can arise due to a narrowing of the blood vessels to the penis, therefore the penis cannot fill with blood properly and achieve erection. This narrowing can occur due to a number of reasons including:
– High blood pressure
– High cholesterol
Erectile dysfunction may also occur due to psychological issues such as anxiety, depression and relationship problems. Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction may also experience performance anxiety. This is when anxiety about being unable to achieve an erection causes more anxiety, contributing to the problem and making it even more difficult to achieve an erection.
What treatments are available?
There are three main drugs available in the UK to treat erectile dysfunction. They are Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (Vardenafil). All of these medicines work by widening the blood vessels to the penis. This allows more blood to enter the penis to achieve an erection. It is important to note that when on these treatments an erection is only achieved when you are sexually stimulated. Please see the table below for differences between. Please note that Cialis also comes in a 2.5mg and 5mg strength that can be taken every day. This therefore allows you to obtain an erection when you would like to, without the need to worry about taking a tablet beforehand.
