Basic Asanas

The practice of asanas, or yogic exercises, represents the most popular phase of yoga. The• acquisition (if these postures may be regarded almost, as a separate science or subject in itself. Yet the word “almost” is very important.
If it were not for the other steps of yoga, there would be no asana It was to aid mental concentration that the early asana postures were developed. From them came more elaborate or more difficult postures that paved the w:ay to higher attainment in the mental field. From that came Hatha Yoga:

It is quite possible for anyone to try and attain the various asanas without considering yoga philosophy at all, just as it is possible for persons to reach high states of contemplation without acquiring numerous asanas. But the Question “why?” will raise itself in each case.

Applied specifically to some one practicing yogic exercises, the question will be: “Why should I try these?” The answer is: “Because such exercises bring results not found in other systems of so-called physical
culture.”

That brings up the next question: “Why is yoga different?” The answer is found in the fact that yoga combines the mental with the physical. That brings us right back to the starting point. Most• persons who take up yogic exercises will learn this for themselves.

They will. find that in thinking, bodily position plays a great part.

That is why the four contemplative postures were given in the previous chapter. Without comfort or physical poise, bodily urges cut into the flow of thought. So the early yogic philosophers-in particular, Fatalistic-found ways whereby the physical activities could be subdued or ‘rendered nil.

Patanjali himself gave no specific postures, indicating that he felt the mental urge would win, provided a simple physical comfort could be-maintained. There we see the mental phase of yoga in predominant form. But it didn’t work that simply. It took centuries of experiment to evolve the eighty-four postures which now comprise the catalog of asanas. According to most authorities, however, only about a dozen of. these are specially useful in yogic physical culture.

THE COBRA POSE (Bhujangasana)

This looks like a rather easy exercise, but it proves increasingly difficult as a person extends it into greater stages. However, it is quite suitable to beginners. as it serves as a yardstick of their own progress.

Lie flat on the face, with hands palms down beside the body, at the chest. Elbows are. raised, but legs are kept close together, knees and toes against the floor. The forehead, too, should touch’ the floor.

Now slowly raise the head, so that it draws the neck and then the shoulders upward with it. Then try to raise the chest, leaning on the hands, which serve as a support. But all the while, the head is working higher, with more pf a backward tilt.

T-his is in imitation of a hooded cobra, from which the asana gains its name, as signified by the word “bhujang.” All the while, the lower portion of the body remains upon the floor, the whole purpose being the arching of the back, through raising the head.

Persons who like this asana will find that they gain increased facility with successive attempts. This is gratifying mentally as well as physically. However, the process should not be rushed. On the contrary, students are advised against such a step because of the strain involved. The right procedure .is to try it a few times each day, halting before reaching .the point of strain.

In a week or two of such practice, the student will find that he has made great progress, depending of course on his personal adaptability to this posture, some persons being more suited to it than others. Remember to take it slowly, by degrees, maintaining the final pose only briefly, then relaxing it by a gradual reversal of the process. Never make the action sudden or jerky. .

Also, remember that the body must keep contact with the floor,
from the navel down to the toes.

The purpose of the Cobra Pose is to render the spine more supple, relieving back pains by tuning up the muscles. The abdominal muscles are’ also strengthened.

The Science Behind Lasik Eye Surgery

Since being brought to market in the early 1990s, tens of millions of people around the world have taken advantage of Lasik eye surgery and put away the eye glasses and contacts forever. The procedure is relatively cost-effective and simple, yielding positive results for the majority of Lasik patients. But how many of those patients know the science behind Lasik?

Lasik is an acronym for the medical term “laser in situ kertomileusis”. The term describes, in essence, what the procedure does; it uses a low level laser to reshape the cornea, the eye’s transparent covering. In patients with near and far-sightedness the cornea is often misshapen, causing blurry vision at certain distances. By reshaping the cornea most patients can expect between 20/20 and 20/40 vision after the procedure. Lasik also seems to be effective astigmatism, an abnormal curvature of the cornea which, under normal conditions, is the shape of a half-moon.

With near-sighted patients the cornea has too much point at the crown of the curve. The laser is used to remove excess tissue and thus, remove the point. Far-sighted patients have the opposite problem; a cornea which is too flat. In this case the laser is used to remove tissue on the perimeter, forming the proper curve. With astigmatism the corneal defect can be manifested in several ways, but the process of removing tissue to restore corneal shape is the same.

As Lasik science has advanced over the years, great strides have been made in using lasers to treat other vision problems as well. Cataract sufferers, for example, begin to lose their vision as calcium deposits from behind the cornea. This condition often rendered its victims blind in past years, but with the same low-level laser an ophthalmologist can now quickly and safely open the cornea and remove the cataract completely. The cornea’s ability to self-heal very rapidly after the procedure makes the use of Lasik even more attractive for cataract patients.

Though Lasik eye surgery can be an effective treatment for a number of vision problems, it does not address the underlying issue which caused the distress to begin with. Normal aging, as well as other health-related issues can once again cause the cornea to lose its proper shape, thus mitigating the benefits of the surgery. However, in most cases the return of poor vision takes quite a long time, making the benefits of the surgery well worth the risk.

Keeping an Eye on Your Data Usage

Welcome screen shows (in % and MB) how much we have spent of our monthly quota. If we keep our current usage constant we will use only 21.6% of my quota, so we will be fine (I believe no one likes to pay those monthly overages).

Also, on this screen we can see how much data is received (downloaded) and transmitted (uploaded) and, of course – total usage. Then we have a quick look on daily, weekly and monthly usage. More than enough data for the welcome screen!

Settings button gives lets us set our monthly qouta (in MB); alerts which will warn us when we are near our quota; update frequency (every hour is fine – more updates, shorter battery life); widget settings (shows quota % used, alert when roaming, etc.) We can also set our phone to vibrate when we’re near our monthly quota, we can set 3G Watchdog to automatically disable 3G (to lower our data usage). 3G Watchdog can work with APNdroid and JuiceDefender. Of course – there is an option to auto-reenable 3G when usage is back under limit.

There is more. When we press “Menu” button on my HTC Desire we get more options: quota traffic history, day traffic history, set quota counters, set today’s counters and refresh.

Quota traffic history shows last 12 recorded quota periods (months).

Day traffic history displays traffic usage for the last 31 recorded days. It also displays averages on all recorded days.

Set quota counters lets you manually enter your quota. You can also reset all counters to zero.

3G Watchdog is a wonderful application and it is a must for every Android phone. It accurately monitors our data usage (3G, GPRS, Edge) and warns us when we are near our quota.
